Every game I can think of uses some sort of button modifier to control speed, apart from the cases where you get "creep" vs. The only thing I can think of is the first mario. I can't remember the last time there wasn't a "run" button on a 3d game, even with the analogue stick. And as Zero Punctuation pointed out, it's stupid that I need to press A to run when I should be able to do that with the move stick like most other games.
